Function
High Quality Cheese
Founded in 1942, the Administrative Office for Appenzeller® cheese was charged to unify cheese production, introduce a formal trade and marketing system and establish a clearly defined production area.
The introduction of high standards of quality was regarded as indispensable. Only cheese rounds furnished with the official cheese seal were to be allowed to bear the name Appenzeller® cheese. In the wake of the liberalization of the Swiss agricultural industry in 1998, the Administrative Office was reorganized and its name was changed to Sortenorganisation Appenzeller Käse GmbH.
The primary aims of the Sortenorganisation are to maintain the status of Appenzeller® cheese as a cheese specialty from Eastern Switzerland and to promote the brand in the appropriate manner. In particular, this means helping to ensure the production of the highest quality of cheese and helping to secure the economic livelihood of the various affiliated enterprises.
