Haus Salesis
Our home is where our roots are – at the Postplatz in the heart of Appenzell. The venerable Haus Salesis is the base of operations for the SO Appenzeller Käse GmbH trade association, an organisation dedicated to the welfare of Appenzeller® cheese.
The historical building houses both the trade association’s offices and its own cheese shop. The history of Haus Salesis can be traced back to the 16th century, when it was rebuilt in 1560 following a large fire which nearly destroyed the whole village. The house is named after Franz Sales Sutter-Fässler, who was the governor of Appenzell in the early 1800s, taking office after Napoleon invaded Switzerland.
After eight months of renovations and careful restoration work, the trade association moved into Haus Salesis in 1996, thereby returning to their origin in Appenzell.
Appenzeller® cheese shop
The upper floors of Haus Salesis are occupied by the trade association’s offices, but the ground floor houses the cozy, historical Appenzeller® cheese shop, where our staff welcomes guests from around the world. The shop offers you our cheese selection, a variety of Appenzeller® merchandise, gifts, and delicious specialty foods from the Alpstein region.
